Hi Koichi Moriyama , Yes thank you I did read the threads but reading further threads led me to believe that that was not necessarily correct. But thank you for the translation I appreciate it I did not mean any disrespect for having doubted it. Is a signature when it is not on the nakago no longer called a mei ?? Best regards John.

A mei could be placed on a nakago or on a blade. A mei on a blade is specifically called Toshin-mei (刀身銘). Toshin-mei were not so common, although there were some.

 

Ex. A wakizashi with a Toshin-mei (a typical style of Kaifu-to (海部刀)) - papered by NBTHK
