Huge Interesting Tsuba

Recommended Posts

Hi.   A very large iron tsuba I have affectionately names ‘the dinner plate’ due to it’s size.   Really attractive piece with an interesting theme in excellent condition.  Signed.   It measures 11.6cm x 10.2cm x 3.1mm.   The theme is a samurai meeting with two kappa by the waters edge.   May be some Japanese fable or folklore.   Comes in a custom made tsuba box.  It makes a great display piece when on a stand.  650usd

Wonder what size blade it went on?

Hi Ken.  I wondered about that too.  Interestingly whilst it is huge it is not heavy, being only about 3mm thick.   This is a good buy for someone who likes something different.  Here it is next to a gunto tsuba.   Mark

That is splendid! I wonder what tale it tells.

A very interesting tsuba.  Perhaps this is Nitta Yoshisada before he attacked Kyoto in 1331 by moving his army along a beach in a surprise attack.  He is said to have prayed on the beach for "the Gods" to open the waters so his troops could pass.  There is a monument to the moment on the beach.  I have a small tsuba  with a similar theme sold to me with this information.

EDIT:  It is the piercing gold eyes that also made me think of the similarity to my tsuba.
