Tanto... not sure what I got there.

I actually got a tanto in pretty decent polish from someone I know.

Due to personal circumstances he decided to give it to me.

It's mumei, the koshirae are in "ok" condition.

blade length: 27cm

moto-kasane: 7mm

I've attached a few pictures from the blade itself and will also add some

of the koshirae it came with.

Reminded of shinshinto Bizen Yokoyama, with the suguha start to the hamon

A few examples of what i refer to

Nakago don't look too old either, perhaps a start for school, you will need to look further into it.

I wouldn't mind one given to me :)

Stefan

you must be a very good person to recieve gifts like this. I agree with Alex and dont think it has great age, but looks in good condition and well made. I think the shape may also be a pointer as although not unusual isn't all that common either so personally I would start trawling some of the shin-shinto or even later smiths.

Good luck with your research

Thanks! Yes... there is lots of useful information on the website!

What's intriguing is that the koshirae seems to be overly large for the tanto. The tsuka was shimmed, The saya is around 10cm longer than it should be for a tanto that length. Very interesting...

Check the depth of the hole with a bit of wire, for tsuka and saya.

By coincidence, i have a tanto here with what seems like overly large tsuka/saya but after i checked depth and fit it seems they were made to fit the blade

Im also curious, so if anyone may know?

"Check the depth of the hole with a bit of wire, for tsuka and saya."

Checked this out just recently with a friend's sword and it proved the point, if you will pardon the pun.  It seems to occur quite often with shorter swords.  I have a wakizashi of some size which has a saya several inches longer than it really needs to be.  Perhaps it has a practical bearing on how the sword was worn and perhaps also how it would look if part of a daisho.

All the best.
