Rare iron 12 plate jingasa. The shape indicates it was likely for a gunner’s troop. However, the quality of the material and construction far exceed what is usually seen for gunners. This could imply that it was made either for an officer or for an elite troop.
The jingasa is made of 12 plates each with 7 rivets. There are also 2 larger rivets placed every 3 plates. I do not know what purpose those 8 larger rivets serve. There are raised ridges which add both visual appeal and strength. There is a beautiful patina which is glossier on the interior. The Interior also features two riveted hoops for the chin cord.
It also seems that the appearance evokes Mt. Fuji which would make this piece even more unusual and artistic.
Regardless of whether or not the semblance to Fuji is intentional, this is a rare piece of exceptional quality.
