Gunto blade coated with clear coat... how to remove it safely.

Hello all

One of the blades I recently acquired appears to be a gunto which someone in the past coated the blade with a clear lacquer(maybe they thought to protect the finish).

What should be used to remove this without damaging the blade's original polish?

Are you sure its lacquer and not renaissance wax or something similar?

Varnish was often used by veterans on old military blades. I imagine this is a similar issue. Methylated spirits is the best way to remove unwanted 'protections' without blade damage. Here's a picture of my Yasumitsu before and after.

Goof off or Goo Gone should do the   job may take more than one app depending how thick the coat is
