Higo (Hayashi) school tsuba for sale

I have an interesting and unusual Higo Sukashi tsuba for sale.

I feel its most likely late Hayashi work (5th master) and is unusual by its offset mokko form. The design combination of crescent moon, chidori and rudder with water droplets make an attractive and unique design.

Dimensions 8.2cm x 7.08cm x 0.53cm thick at the centre and 0.49cm at the mimi with a nice solid 132g

Good unrestored iron which has a good patina which will improve further with cotton cloth work.

Box shown is a prop and not included in the sale ( just lent from another tsuba to illustrate how it displays)

£385 plus postage

Kindest regards

Michael

Dear members,

After consulting with a friend who knows far more than myself about Higo I change the attribution on this tsuba from Hayashi to Nishigaki ( around time of 3rd master ) as the off set mokko shape is not seen in Hayashi but is very rarely seen in Nishigaki. The 3rd master Nishigaki was a little more adventurous and copied / adapted designs from the other Higo schools and this is thought to be his play on Hayashi style.

Kindest regards

Michael
