Firstly, a damn nice Kai Gunto. 

Bruce , my (limited ) experience with Kai ashi is basically what I have , and most variations are in the heart shaped "boars eye" and how they are attached to the saya.

Well sorry everybody- after looking at a close-up, I realized the original up top is a boars eye, it just has a screw at the top of it which to my poor eyes on my small phone looked like a totally unique pattern. Sorry!

Wow a really nice blade. Lots of chikei. This would be polished a stunning blade.

The yasurime is very well executed. Congratulation take care of it.

I got to looking at the screws and it's clear the fitter put the screws in to keep the ashi from sliding/moving on the saya.

Chris S, I've looked over these photos many times, where did you see the Chikei?  Do you mean Ashi?

Nice!!!!  That really is a lovely blade. Definitely take care of it!  Might benefit from a polish, but I don't know whether you would see an increase in value equal to the cost of the polish.

 

But, it is really nice, so if you think it's a keeper, maybe it's worth it.  It's in relatively good condition, so I would assume that they would not need to bring it back as much or address any geometry issues.

Chris S, I've looked over these photos many times, where did you see the Chikei?  Do you mean Ashi?

I have a hard time seeing them too, but there may indeed be chikei near the habaki. Not sure though.
