Unsigned wakizashi being offered up for review

 If it wasn't for the cherry blossom menuki, I would say that this was one of those swords that tend to get lumped together as "Satsuma Rebellion" swords, aka Okashi-To. All the other parts are fairly old and not Gunto. The Ito looks right, but "economical" or has shrunk.

My take on this one is that a family sword was mounted for WWII by replacing the samurai tsuka with a WWII tsuka.  The tsuba, though in poor shape, looks like Bushu Ito or Choshu work and was once a very nice piece.  The saya is not very visible, so it's not possible to say whether it was the original one or was refitted with a new saya during wartime.  I would not assume that the blade is junk.  In fact, it may be nice; we would just need more photos to speculate more.
