Our teppotai General Nobuhara owned this kabuto and has decided to donate it to the Zen Temple of Sogenji in Okayama. He had it X-rayed and the construction points to Muromachi, possibly connecting to Ikeda Tsuneoki who fought with Oda Nobunaga. In the beautiful gardens can be found some of the Ikeda family graves. He reckons that the temple needs to have a physical link with the Ikeda family, so this kabuto will go on permanent display there. (Sogenji is interesting as the Zen monks there come from all over the world. Worth a visit if you are ever in the area. How a Zen temple should look, really simple and natural, not all touristy and flashy like the ones in Kyoto.)

Ikeda family memento gifted to Sogenji Temple

A privately owned artefact related to the Ikeda family has been presented to Sogenji, the family temple and final resting ground for the Ikeda family.

It is thought that this helmet is from the Muromachi Period. Large and shining on the forehead is the Bizen-Cho butterfly Kamon of the Ikeda family, showing that it must have been owned by someone of high rank.

Mr Nobuhara, descended from a high retainer of the Ikeda family and a collector of their artefacts, handed it over to the Head Priest Harada Shodo with an explanatory manuscript.

The Kabuto will be placed in a (glass) case and displayed in the main hall of Sogenji Temple.
