New photographs of sword

Recommended Posts

last month I posted some photographs of a sword for comment I have some better ones now . The sword is covered with Nie when outside it sparkled and if turned the right way it turned a purplish colour and then turned again a bright gold colour showing the swords thick Nie  it also seems to have a fully tempered Kissaki with lots of Nie . One thing I see is angular bright Nie lines on the sword in places (see Pic) these are not scratches .  It also came with Gold dragon Menuki  Thanks Geoff Foletta

Geoff,

maybe you can see these features holding your blade in hand, but for my old eyes nothing of that can be seen in the photos. The condition of the blade is too bad; NIE needs a good (traditional) polish to come out properly. In addition to that you need very good photos to show it.

Hello,

It is as Jean says difficult to say much about the sword in this condition. Better overall images along with images of the nakago would be helpful. After further evaluation having a window opened might be a good option here.

While one should evaluate a sword for the sword and the fittings for the fittings, these menuki raise the interest level about the sword as generally you don't find menuki of this quality on a bad sword. That is if they indeed belong with this sword. Looks like Goto dragons, would like to see images of the back of these.

After careful examination it looks to be a potential Soshu hamon, even though it's a bit strange (gaudy) and seems like it could have been etched in at some point with acid (as it looks on your first thread). I'm assuming it's mumei, the nakago is passable, and there are no fatal flaws hiding in there.

High probability: Muromachi Shimada

Low probability: Tametsugu

It's a decent lottery ticket.

Blue iron, Koto Mino?

From what I can see of the little nie in the photos and the seeming color, I went to Mino.

Other hamon activity throws me a bit, so maybe Chris' call of Soshu is not a bad one. It is the Koto macro group I know the least, so will leave that call to you guys.

Geoff:    Can we see pictures of the nakago?

I showed the sword to a collector today and after a good look under different lighting the Boshi seems it may be a wide midare-komi not ichimai its very hard to tell. This may change any thoughts of what it is Thanks Geoff
