Saya Textures Thread

I love to enjoy saya textures. I would be happy to see different textures from your collection that you like.

 

I start with some of mine.

Nice examples Chris, a very interesting topic.  Japanese lacquer is a fascinating subject, so many techniques and variations.

Exposure is bright to show texture (or lack thereof), it's a much softer and subtle green under natural light.

The last one is very nice Ed. Orange and Black. Is this lacquered same?

I don't think it's lacquered same. It's very smooth and in some areas the motif is faded. I think it just paint. But the orange brown spots makes a really nice and subtle pattern.

All the subtle variations of the Haliotis shell lacquers are fascinating,  like snowflakes they are superficially alike....but on close inspection very different.

Great idea, but also, lots of work.  Just having Brian preserve the thread would be fine, If people are inspired by a particular image they can always research the proper name of the technique.

Where it is now I do not know, but a former ToKen member had a wakizashi that had the saya heavily sprinkled with pink abalone. Clearly the artist broke off specific parts of the shell to obtain the colour they wanted. You see plenty of green and blues, but that was the only pink one I have seen. Speaking of green a dealer in the UK has / had a daisho with the saya covered with pieces of malachite. I have one done with egg shell which again isn't common.

Let's hope Ian gets the new camera working, eggshell lacquer (keiran-nuri/tamago-ji) decorated saya ARE quite uncommon, it would be a nice addition here.  It's a technique that had a fair degree of popularity on inro, smaller boxes etc., but is seldom seen in larger formats.
