I just saw this Haynes Index book on eBay

A smart man once said spend your first $1000 on books and look at as many swords as possible. Try to make it to a miltary show like Show of Shows or the Max. Swords show like Chicago, San Fran, or Tampa (please take beginners class before you handle any blades)
