 Upper release button is pressed by the sword wielding hand, or you can press the lower release button with the hand holding the saya. It gives a a choice of grip on the tsuka so the hand is not choked against the tsuba, and can save a second or two when you need the blade out in a hurry.

I have often said that - IF it had come down to swords, Japan would have won WWII. If the people who designed officers' swords had been assigned to aircraft or tank design, just imagine what wonderful weaponry they could have come up with. Instead, what they got was an over designed bit of late medieval armament.
