Kyu-Gunto Backstrap Kanji

Recommended Posts

I posted this under military swords without success, so let's try here. This what's on the backstrap of a Kyu-gunto D-guard sword that I've had for years. I've checked Fuller's book and Dawson's large volume but found nothing like this illustrated. I'd love to know the meaning of these two kanji. I found the first one with suggestions like Seki, Shaku, Aka, Akashi...but could not connect it to the second kanji. The interesting mon is of a butterfly (cho) in Chappelears book, page 55, which lists some prominent families. Appreciate whatever can be understood about this koshirae. the blade was sold individually back in the 1980s, so it seems.

Thanks as always. Ron STL

Thanks Steve. Strange, probably why I never found anything on this years ago. Thinking about this sword, I am pretty sure it contained an ubu signed/dated Tsuda Sukenao katana. I had it polished and put in shirasaya, It didn't make Juyo and a few years ago sold the sword to a local friend, so it is still around so we can enjoy it. Maybe somebody will come up with something on the meaning behind the backstrap kanji. Ron STL
