post-3432-0-18241200-1546448615_thumb.jpgpost-3432-0-34958100-1546448631_thumb.jpgA comparable example.  Compare the 1627 version(Chatsworth House) ,on the left, with the 1637-38 version(Louvre) ,on the right, of 'Et in Arcadia ego' by Poussin.  This and the Yoshitoshi share the same huge shift in style, atmosphere, and composition.  The compositional element is obviously more extreme in the Poussin...but I believe it makes the point.  I think you'll agree that Poussin's final version is also sublime.

Not to mention the whole raft of conspiracy theories surrounding Berenger Saunier, the Merovingians and Rennes le Chateau in respect of the version in the Louvre..... Is there a Dan Brown in the House?..... ;-)
