A member was msuing weather these might be signed. So i asked Sir Ford Hallam best method to remove pitch.

Morning Stephen

Solvents tend not to work very well on old pitch so I'd suggest heating with a hot air gun or similar. When it's all too hot to hold with bare fingers, use cloth, and pry it off with a sliver of wood or something non metallic.

The motif refers to the incense game, the feather is used to brush ashes away from the burning incense and the charcoal, etc.

The clam shells are also a game. Each half has part of a scene from a play painted on the inside. The shells are mixed up, face down, and you pick on and then must find the correct half to match.

Hope that helps

Ford

post-3432-0-65531600-1543672423_thumb.jpgOf course, Kai-awase, a poetry game played using clamshells with beautifully decorated lacquer interiors, some of these sets are of very fine quality.  The feather is part of the equipment for Kodo, the incense ceremony/game.  Great Menuki!
