ortos
Hello, friends! I am new to this forum and only at the beginning of the knowledge of nihonto. Recently bought is such a small tanto. Total length about 21 cm. Blade unpolished, forged defects are clearly visible. I would like to hear your opinion on this tanto. Is it a modern job or is it an older thing? Thank you all for the answer. Sincerely, Alex.
Guest Rayhan
Welcome Alex! I am not an expert and especially not on Tanto but the current condition will not help shed much light on the period or authentication I hope you did not pay much for it. Any other details? ROKUJURO
Alex, looking mainly at the NAKAGO, it looks rather clearly like a very late tourist piece, but there might be a chance it is just a piece of a broken blade..
ortos
Thanks for the answer! I can only add that purchased in Japan, inexpensive. Although the seller and positioned this tanto as old, but even for such a novice, like me, it was clear that the blade of the 20th century. You just confirmed my conclusions. Thank. Sincerely, Alex. Dave R
Going by the photo's, I see forging flaws, a hira-zukuri blade, and a nakago that is made from the blade after shortening. Best guess is a cut down wakizashi of unknown date, and no great value. Nonetheless, you have a nihonto, and it all depends on what you paid for it. The killer here is whether it has its original point, or has been cut from further back in the blade. Time for some serious uchiko!
nagamaki - Franco
Hello, Old, new, doesn't matter, this piece is lifeless, there is nothing here of intrinsic value. Chalk this up to lesson learned, tuition paid, not to be repeated.
Jean
I am unable to say if hamon still exists but nakago is so mishaped and this blade so abused that the Value is 10 to 20 $ for someone interested in a piece of steel.

Geraint
Dear Alex. I think Greg was asking if the blade comes with mounts. All the best.
Greg F
Yes thanks Geraint, did it come in shirasaya or koshirae? Greg
ortos
Hello! Sorry, but my English is not so good, so I did not understand the question. Koshirae is, but they are clearly modern and national teams, so I think you should not even pay attention to them. However, as the blade itself. I took this tanto in Japan quite inexpensively.Despite my modest nihonto knowledge, I absolutely had no illusions about this blade and bought it as a modern version. Your opinions only confirmed my initial views. Of course, not 10-20 dollars, but more expensive, but still, despite modernity (or a piece of old blade), I like this blade in my own way. Thank you all for the answers. Sincerely Alex
