I see many posts here and elsewhere on swords with questionable mei. BEFORE YOU BUY, here is what I do and was shown by a commissioned expert. Find examples. Look at styles, placement, depth of stroke. References are key (the better ones) but usually you can compile enough from online resources to make an educated guess.

Excellent points, most useful in separating the 'Chaff from the Wheat'.  Those who forget the BEFORE often regret the AFTER.
