Akasaka Tsuba Papered To 3Rd Generation Tadatoki

For sale is an Edo period Akasaka tsuba with papers.

The tsuba is made of iron with finely cut sukashi. It is unsigned but has papers from the Nihon tōsōgu kenkyūkai (日本刀装具研究会) dated 2011 attributing it to Akasaka Tadatoki (3rd generation). This would be Tadatoki H09167 in the Haynes index who died in 1796 and was the sixth master of the Akasaka school.

Clearly visible in the nakago ana is the three-layer construction (see pictures). You also can see that the extreme fine sukashi walls have suffered a little here and there, there are mainly two parts which I show in the pictures, its hard to find them without zoom. At the inside the walls are covered with what I think is old Urushi lacquer. There are no holes in the walls, no rattling, no rust.

This is still a very good studying piece and well worth to be collected. Elegant design, well forged iron and brillant workmanship! Tsuba measures 72mm x 67.5mm, 4mm at the rim and 5.5mm at the centre.

Price is 600,- Euro. Buyer will pay the real shipping cost, will be shipped from Germany.
