Remounted Family Sword?

I was given this sword many years ago by a WWII veteran.  In the mid 1990's a member of the Japanese Sword club for Northern Virginia looked at it and gave me his thoughts (attached as a Word file).  He believed it was an older family sword remounted for an Officer for WWII.  Having recently discovered this foum, I would like to learn more about the sword if possible.  I reduced the size of the photos, hope the details are visible.

His thoughts pretty much cover it. its a nice bit of history by its self id not have it polished rather get some top quality uchiko and make a daily or weekly routine of respecting its history. Leaving it as last used. You'll be surprised what will show in a few months with your zen powdering.

Search for proper use of uchiko, you'll be handling a bare blade as habaki is off during the process.

Very nice piece, and a little unusual to see an existing Tsuba cut for a spring latch, usually they fitted a leather strap through the existing opening. Quite a heartfelt sword with the inscription on an old family blade, glad it has found it's way into the hands of someone able to take care of it. The tassel indicates ranks from Lieutenant to Captain.
