Mitsuhiro Help

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Trying to do some research on a particular swordsmith. The swordsmith in question is Mitsuhiro.

I have a Katana (Gendiato, I think) with a mei of “Hizen Kuni Mitsuhiro”

There are no stamps or no date on the nakago.

Some pictures of hada and hamon in this thread

http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/25529-hada-help/

He is listed in Sloughs page 112

Real name of Yamaguchi Fukutaro

Born 1898

Studied under Kurihara Hikosaburo (Akihide) as a part time student.

I would like to try and find out when he became fully trained if possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best

Mark C

Hi Mark,

I just saw your question and looked him up.

Born 1908 (Mei 41)

Became a member of the swordsmiths society under Kurihara in 1935 (Sho 10).

Joined the Jap. Sword Academy 1941 (Sho 16).

The same year entered the RJT scheme until the end of the war.

He became a senior member and was head of the group (among other posts). Won many prizes including the gold award.

He re-entered swords after the war in July 17 1954.

(ONO Gendai Toko Kinko Shokukata Soran  1977 p.128).

The fact that it has no stamps or date indicates it is a private sale...certainly outside the RJT scheme.

Hope this helps,

Hi Mark,

My apologies, I just saw this post again and checked my answer as it is so different from your OP details...I got the date wrong...it IS Mei 31 as you quoted (1898)...must have been looking at an adjoining entry in ONO. Sorry about that.

Regards,
