Kaga no Kuni tanto, koto period.
Late Muromachi period (Eiroku era, from 1558), mumei, hirazukuri, nagasa 27.4 cm, uchi-zori, motohaba 2.2 cm, strong itame hada with mixed mokume, narrow suguha hamon. Total length of koshirae is 47 cm.
Assessed at shinsai in Brisbane in 1988 (visiting sword group from Chiba, Japan) as early period Kanazawa Kaga-to (late Muromachi).
This tanto reflects the influence of Etchu and Soshu-den with kitae of elongate itame hada and long irregular bands of alternating dark and bright iron (soft and hard), often called matsukama (“pine bark”). Many of these tosho were of Hashizume group and had names starting with “Iye”.
Tanto typically had this slight negative sori, also flat edge mune (mitsu mune). Mumei with ubu nakago, 2 nakago ana.
Habaki is 2 piece gold foil cover, fuchi is gold plated sworls design and signed (Edo Ju, Yoshihisa). Mounted in Higo style, brass kashira-kojiri, with dragon menuki (coiled and gilted) and dragon on copper kozuka. Oval plain copper tsuba with matched pair of gilt seppa. Bound in brown leather, good same skin. Black lacquer saya, horn kurikata with gilt shitadome, cotton sageo.
Complete old blade in polish and very good condition, no rust, chips, bends, cracks.
