rkg
Hi, As I posted earlier, I need to thin the tsuba herd, and to that end, here's the first batch. In case you didn't see it, here's my preview video of these: NOTE: be sure to look at ALL the images carefully of any pieces you are interested in, particularly the VR image sets as they can reveal more details about the pieces.Tsuba 1: mokko shaped saotome $250 HOLD This piece measures 77.3mm (H) X 73.6mm (W) X 2.9mm (T, at nakago ana) 3.9mm (T, mimi) you can kind of see a fold line running across the piece on the back (where the iron eroded a little more than the surrounding metal). You can see a bit or two of lacquer remaining on the front as well. I was stumped by the theme of the sukashi. A couple of people on Rich Turner's old kodogu no sekai page suggested it might represent a kanji - either 天 (ten) heaven or 大 (dai) It's pretty old - I'd say late muromachi period.Images:http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/mokko_saotome_2/mokko_saotome_2_front.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/mokko_saotome_2/mokko_saotome_2_back.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/mokko_saotome_2/mokko_saotome_2_oblique_front.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/mokko_saotome_2/mokko_saotome_2_front_scale.jpg VR image sets:http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/mokko_saotome_2/mokko_saotome_front/mokko_saotome_front.html http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/mokko_saotome_2/mokko_saotome_back/mokko_saotome_back.html Tsuba 2: yamagane/silver inome-mokko shaped tsuba, plum branch/blossom theme $225 HOLD This piece measures: 70.9mm (H) X 69.3mm (W) X 5.8mm (T, nakago ana) 6.4mm (T, max, mimi) this tsuba made from yamagane with a thin silver fukurin, and was probably made in the Hizen or more specifically the Nagasaki area. There's all kinds of interesting remnants on he surface (what appears to be black lacquer, some gold lacquer or inlay, etc etc). The piece has some age to it - you can see some pretty serious buildup in the inome, as well as the heavy patina on the fukurin, etc- I'd date it to the early edo or possibly Momoyama period. images: http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_front.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_back.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_front_oblique.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_back_oblique.jpg http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_front_scale.jpg VR image sets:http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_inome_front/hizen_inome_front.html http://www.rkgphotos.com/sale_stuff/sale_stuff_2017_11/hizen_inome/hizen_inome_back/hizen_inome_back.html Tsuba 6: plum blossom/snowflake themed tosho $130 HOLD This piece measures: 70.5mm(H) X 70.9mm(W) X 4.57mm (T, max, at nakago ana), tapering to the edge terminating in a maru mimi The iron in this little guy is really nice - you can see bones in the mimi (like the one at one o'clock visible in the front side view). I showed this one to Haynes and he claimed it was probably originally made for an o-tanto and dated to ca. 1500.
