My grandfather gave me this sword he is 87 years old and fought in three wars, im curious what kind it is and when it was made all info i can get thank you in advance for your time

This is either a very bottom of the barrel, last ditch sword made in Japan at the end of WWII or, more likely, a fake Japanese sword made either in someplace like the Philippines shortly after the war or China even later.

as Grey said: very probably not Japanese.

Its  a copy of a Japanese Gunto, and sorry, not a very good one.

 

How grandfather came about it is probably a better story than the blade is.
