Ray Singer
Listing on behalf of another NMB member, this is an ubu wakizashi signed 'Omi Daijo Fujiwara Tadahiro'. I was with the owner when it was found, and commented to him that the sloping yasuri-mei were an indicator that the sword was a possible dai-saku dai-mei by the sandai (Mutsu no kami Tadayoshi). I suggested that he purchase the sword and contact Roger Robertshaw for his thoughts. He did so, and Roger likewise felt it looked good and that the style of mei/yasurimei indicated a dai-saku dai-mei by the sandai (Mutsu [no] Kami Tadayoshi). The owner, who is primarily a fittings collector, has decided to put funds towards other things at this time (new acquisitions and shinsa for kodogu). This piece is being offered for his original purchase price of $1,400 (plus shipping and PayPal). The sword as mentioned is completely ubu, with a very well preserved nakago (clear mei, no pitting, no modifications). The blade has scratches throughout, but it appears that the hamon is a wide suguha, perhaps with a slight notare feel. It does not appear that the kissaki has sustained any damage or indicate reshaping. In addition to the scratches there are a few spots of shallow spider rust. It is difficult to make out the jihada. A ko-itame is expected for this school but there do appear to be some patches of coarse hada, The handachi koshirae is complete, and the saya interestingly has a silver kurigata which I believe is in the toppei style, encircling in the saya. The length is 50.0cm, with a moto-haba of 3.0cm and kasane of 5.5mm. The sandai was considered to be one of the best of the Hizen mainline, being rated as Jojo-saku in Fujishiro and Saijo O-Wazamono for cutting ability. When I return home on Monday evening I will share additional photos. For anyone interested, I will connect them directly with the owner.
