2 New Sets.. Any Opinions Or Makers Info?

Hi all,

 

Recently i have been trying to build up my Tosogu collection with some nicer pieces. These are 2 new acquisitions from AOI. I know that one is made by Shige Mitsu, but which one? The other is mumei. Can anyone please point out some key points that would help me  identify the maker? Does anyone have any information on what schools of workmanship they represent?

I actually find the Kingfisher on the reeds mumei F/K more to my taste. John

There was a NARA SHIGEMITSU, but I don't know for sure if your's is by him. 
By the way, I like both, and it is a pity that I cannot enlarge the photos.

Makers, would lean towards Nara for both.

 

Opinion, for the kingfisher set I would not be surprised to learn someone had refinished this set.

Franco. What do you see that makes you think refinished? I looked at the f/k in magnification in as high a resolution as my phone will get. Is it lack of detail or the cloudy look in the raw copper of the metal?

Thanks for the feedback guys.. really appreciate the knowledge.. I always thought most nara school was more brassy looking? Shows what I know.

As for that patina, it looks like they got  a little scratched up in that location so it may explain the way it looks in the photo.. .
oh, I almost forgot.. I picked up this set of menuki as well..what do you think of these?

In the future instead of buying two- buy one, four- buy one. In the long run quality will.always please, and prove the better investment.

 

BTW, for Tosogu I don't find Aoi particularly appealing. Happy Hunting.

Suggest doing an image search using combinations of the words nara fuchi kashira + kingfisher. By viewing many examples, as well as the best examples possible of a particular school, we begin to develop our eyes and understanding of what these items should look like.

Then when we see something that doesn't seem quite right, it becomes apparent.

In the case of yours my guess would be the original finish was lacking, and instead of a proper restoration someone pickled the whole thing to look black.
