Masatsune - Ikegami Kazuhito - Gendaito In Type 98 Koshira

The sword is signed by the wartime gendaito smith Masatsune. Masatsune, whose real name was Ikegami Kazuhito was born July 31st 1916 and studied sword forging as a student of Sakai Shigemasa. He worked between 1926-1989, producing high quality gendaito swords. Examples by this smith are rare to find. This sword is fully papered.

The blade is in very good polish, though there are a few light micro scratches down either length from when the sword was sheathed. A gentle clean with an uchiko ball would probably remove these, but they do not detract from the study and I personally do not like uchiko use. The sword forging shows a tight masame-hada and is the hamon is readily apparent. I would describe it as midare, but I have not been studying long enough to make a definitive call. Unfortunately there are two small pits on the blade and a minor ware, but these are only tiny detractors reflected in the price. I have tried to include pictures of the hamon, but for some reason I really struggled to take good photographs this time. Believe me that the sword is so, so much nicer in hand! I purchased it from SwordGuyJoe early on, so he can attest to the blades quality.

Dimensions of blade:

Nagasa – 64cm

Nakago – 26cm

Sori – 3cm

Kissaki – 4cm

The koshirae is standard military type 98. The saya liner is a replacement I think, but all the other parts are genuine. It does appear that one seppa is possibly a replacement though, as it has a hole for a press-clip. The seppa were charged around so often though that it could have been done a few years ago or decades back during the war. It would be a simple matter to replace with another more suitable one. Otherwise the koshirae is in fantastic condition, with only the lightest sweat stains to the silk ito and a small amount of wear to the leather and fittings. There appears to be remnants of painted kanji on the nakago, so this is certainly a wartime sword for military use. Really, the koshirae is just a bonus with the blade.

This is a great study sword with a really interesting hamon, I just need capital right now.

Price is a FIRM $3,000 U.S. which includes shipping. Insurance is at your discretion and loss is entirely your risk if you forgo it. I highly recommend it though at only about $80 U.S. for full insurance on lost in transit or damaged. I have references on the board for buying and selling if necessary. I detest PayPal and their blind policies, and it is so open to fraud that I will not accept a payment for merchant goods. A PayPal payment as 'friends and family' is acceptable though. Bank transfer in Australia is best and I have sold with this in the past without issue. Cheque is fine as well for the old timers.

he say he buy from you mon...lol

Hahaha! Whoops. Well, in my defense, I did say I had one that looked pretty similar. Since that is the case, I'm pretty sure the 84 is a typo and he likely means 64 cm or thereabouts. It is a nice sword though and you don't find much from this smith out there. I recommend this greatly for someone looking for a good gendaito blade to study.

Good luck with the sale Steve.

Ha! That's funny! The 6 got moved to the sori and replaced by an 8. One of the many reasons I hate typing on a tablet along with auto correct making sentences incomprehensible!

And thank you Joe, it's been a lovely sword to enjoy.
