Steve Waszak
Offered here is Tsuneishi Hideaki's Tsuba no Kantei to Kansho. 1978. 330 pages. 7.5" x 5.5". In Japanese. Condition is excellent, outside of a small tear on the dust jacket (see photo). This book is quite interesting in that it includes a "banzuke" of tsubako similar to the one Markus Sesko wrote about in his October 2nd, 2016 blog. This one differs from that he referenced in that this one includes the great soft-metal workers (Goto, etc...). It is in Japanese, of course, but it isn't too difficult to identify the artists. These banzuke function as a sort of "ranking" of tsuba/tosogu artists. Very interesting to see the perceptions here. There is also included a map of Japan which locates all of the major tsubako in their respective provinces. Again, quite interesting, and a useful quick reference. The book introduces and discusses the various major tsuba artists, traditions, and schools we are familiar with, but offers a valuation (in yen) of the different workers, thus adding to the banzuke in presenting a sort of ranking system. It is possible to go through the book and locate the relative "value" of given artists according to Tsuneishi. Below are photos of the front and back covers of the book, the banzuke, the map of Japan and the tsubako working in the many provinces, and a few sample images of the contents of the book. Lots of interesting content here. $65 plus shipping. Cheers, Steve
