Traditionally made blade, signed Tadatsugu.

For me, hard to pin down the two character mei to any particular Tadatsugu, not much info, although I think the mei is genuine, doubt Tadatsugu is a target for a gimei anyway. Neatly signed, maybe an obscure smith, I cant say for sure. Mid to late Edo I guess.

The blade caught my eye, unusual nakago shape, Maru type mune, Sujikai Yasurime just about visible to the naked eye. Nice patina to the nakago, although I doubt my photography will help.

Mokume hada (quite tight) with Notare hamon visible. 17.5" nagasa, not had time do all measurements yet.

The koshirae fittings are ok for the price, Shakudo Kashira with an horse engraved, Shakudo plain fuchi.

The tsuba is solid copper with a Shakudo finish, feels hefty in hand.

Only one menuki, appears to be iron, clueless as to what it may be, possibly a shell.

The Tsuka ito is not the best ive seen, but adequate, not too worn either.

The saya has seen better days, split at the opening and loss of lacquer here and there. I assume this could be sorted out if the new buyer wished to do so, I have the details of a craftsman in the UK they could ask, tsuka too.

The blade sadly comes with a few dinks and scratches, looks like some kids have had it at one time or another, possibly a Zatoichi type character kicked off in an Izakaya lol, joking aside, one or two where likely made by another blade, saw these through the eye glass earlier, fun to speculate.

Anyways, £495 ono, buyer covers any fees, donation to NMB if sold here.

Will get a shipping price for anyone interested, PM me at alex.aspinall@sky.com if interested and I will give you more pics and details.

Will add a few pics soon

I will have more time for pictures later today. I'm away next week so looking for a quick sale, hence now £440 ono.

There are issues with the blade and the koshirae, but I suppose at this price that's to be expected.

Not spent a great deal of time on this blade, but the penny may have just dropped. so to speak.

Its possible the nakago has been re-shaped to make the blade look older, maybe? (although its just a thought?). Mei looks ok, hard to say for sure.

On further thoughts, that would explain the mune too. (possibly), possibly longer sword cut down.

If this is the case, someone gone to a lot of trouble, and then to add "Tadatsugu" ?

I suppose more thought should have gone into it before i listed it, but its a tricky hobby sometimes.

Still, its at the cheap end, traditionally forged sword with with koshirae.

I will look over the sword again today, get a few more pics.

Ignore the above^, had some more time today messing about, an unusual sale, apologies, all this over £400 sword

A case of me trying to get things straight for anyone interested (and satisfy my own curiosity), more used to having papered swords. I will say that this little saga as been more fun than any other sword I bought before, I can see why some of the older gents miss the old days.

What led me to think the sword was made to look old is the very strange shaped Nakago, kind of an elongated Funa-gata. The gent I bought the sword from said it was unusual, beginning to think I should keep it as a curiosity ;-) .

From "facts and fundamentals". "There are various nakago shapes, however, they generally fall into categories mentioned here. If you find one that don't, there is no cause for concern"............. I like that :)

Anyway, after much thought, I think the nakago has not been messed with, judging by mekugi ana, file marks, patina, shinogi line, funbari. There is a few dinks in the nakago too, ive added a few photos. The mune is rare for the time too, unusual little sword.

Ive added a few pics in sunlight, there is Ji-nie

Also, pic of the split saya which is not in good condition, as mentioned, lots of lacquer loss, I think repairable but best speaking to an expert.

Not much in the way of forging flaws, no hagire.

Ps, noticed very SLIGHT bend towards the kissaki earlier today, forgot mention.

For anyone who does not want to spend a lot and wants a traditionally made antique sword in koshirae, open to offers.

Il add pics below, just in case I lose all this......again.
