A rare beauty.  Everywhere you look, so fine and delightful detail.  Really a treat to look at - and touch!  The pictures don’t do it justice.

Apparently, there is a painting of Miyamoto Musashi with a mozu bird (shrike) sitting upon his shoulder.  The mozu is known for impaling its prey on thistles or branches, as we see here with the fish head.   In this way, it compensates for its weakness.  In the Edo era, frogs and snakes were also venerated hunters.  On Setsubun in early February, the Japanese wrap iwashi (sardines) in hiiragi (holly) leaves, making a talisman.  The unpleasant smell and thorns are thought to ward off the devil and bad spirits.  See picture: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setsubun    I believe the kozuka knife signature is Tamba no Kami Yoshimichi the 7th, who lived and worked in Osaka ca.1780 .  He is called Yoshinori and died in Kyowa Sannen (1803).

Certified on Showa 35 (1960) May 8 as Tokubetsu Kichou (particularly valuable) by the NBTHK (Nihon Bitjutsu Token Hozon Kyoukai)   http://www.nbthk-ab.org/Japan.htm
