Livio 3rd
The wave motif of this tsuba looks like the Nami (wave) Mon used by a handful of families including the Maeno (surname of an Oda Nobunaga retainer), the Soga, the Shimazaki and a few variants by the Oguri. The Nami design is repeated on four corners, rendering a mokko-gata form. The waves have carved and chiseled details, suggesting water. Compare with Boston Museum of Art accession number 11.11500 (this can easily be looked up from the BMA website.) It must be from the same workshop. Gilt, kinko band around the seppa-dai possibly added to suit a particular koshirae. Excellent condition. About 2 3/4 inches (6.99 cm) high, 2 9/16 inches (6.51 cm) wide, 3/16 inches (.48 cm) thick. 17th/18th century. $575 to NMB members ($675 on our website.) Shipping free in U.S., please inquire for abroad. Another piece from the collection offered here to balance sales against recent collecting.
