Had a guided tour through the collection last Monday Tom. The low estimations doesn't mean much....as you know!

Actually it's not an oni 鬼, but a shikami 魅.

They are easily distinguished by their horns. Oni have square heads with small, conical, stubby horns. The shikami has the face of a shishi, and the ears and horns of an oxen, and is frequently depicted without a lower jaw (but not always). One will only see the head of a shikami, but never the body. Shikami are sometimes described as onimen shishi 鬼面獅子, "devil/demon-faced lions".

From the Nambokuchō period on, the shikami was one of the favorite subjects of maedate.

Here's one on a suit of armor of mine:

Nice armor Guido!

I`ve to admit, that you are right in this case. It`s indeed a "shikami". I was a bit negligent with my first claim.

Sometimes also seen "Fûjin" and "Raijin". Gods of wind and thunder......

It's not that unique, I've got one. But they are very hard to find.

Hey, don't be too hard on yourself - NMB is not a competition*! ;-) The shikami is one of the more rare mythical creatures, and can be easily confused for an oni or shishi or something else along those lines. That I was able to identify it just shows what a warehouse of randomly stored, more or less useless, bits of info on obscure things Japanese my brain turned into. I'm not sure if I should be thankful or alarmed. :doubt:

*I know that some forumites have a different take on that.

These used to be *very*rare.  Now all you need is a cell phone to find them.

Pointing out the difference between oni and shikami was valuable. I would have made the mistake.

Thank you.

Surely the toppai kabuto with double mabizashi, which the auction description fails to mention, is at least unusual....no?

Are we talking about that or about the shikami? (Which I too have learned about for the first time.)

All the best

I think we are talking about both.

Here's my one.
These kabuto are hard to find. Momoyama period.
