Kanmuri-Otoshi? Nagamaki Naoshi?

I got this blade in poor conditions for relatively low and i have some doubts .

It has a bad/unfinished polish and some rust splash with spider scratches on the edge.Shape is good and is very sharp(almost razor). Its likely been in military usage, its mumei but has on the tang like 4 straight horizontal lines that could be 22,to keep track at an armory? or  was the blade nº22 of a swordsmith order?

My doubts are: it was forged like this or it was shortened? Does anyone who recoginze the shape guess the age(shinto?)?

Is worth of polish?Thanks

Josh,

shape is shobu-zukuri. I assume Shinto and made this way. Difficult to judge from the pics if it's worth a polish. Seems that someone starts the work and decided to leave it alone. Otherwise looks quite healthy......

As above - looks like typical shobu-zukuri. From the looks of the tang I'd guess that it has not been shortened. I don't have a clue about the marks. They don't look military, and neither does the size or the shape of the sword. Shinto would also be my guess. The polish will most likely cost more than you could recover in re-sale (but it would definitely improve the appearance).

Weren't wakis with these shape common between footsoldiers? I readed that in many ocassions this shape was preffered over the classic shinogi zukuri because it was a heavier and chop chop lethal in close combats.I mainly deduced it could been military for the markings, but now i'm doubt.Nagasa is 40cm

Shobu zukuri blades aren't significantly different weight wise than other blade styles unless their dimensions make them so.

They are slightly quicker to make than shinogi zukuri blades as there is no need to add s yokote.

I have never heard or read that. I would be surprised if that were the case. As John says above, I don't think there is any significant weight differential between the two.

There is a little notch on the jiri of the nakago.

Look closely to see if that is the top side of a mekugiana.

Put a window in it. The shape is quite similar to the Aoe naginata naoshi in my Bizen book which is Juyo. Judging on sugata is great for archetypes but it can lead you down the wrong road easily enough. Workmanship is a lot harder to mess up though and that's what's missing here. But do have a good look at the jiri to see what that mark is.

Sadly, juyo blades don't grow on trees xD

That notch is hard to say,it doesnt make it to the other side but has that yellowish ocre rust that are on mekugi ans but kinda look just as a flaw?Tomorrow i will post pics with more light.

And concerning the window, can you recommend a good polisher in Europe?

Thanks
