Scroll Translation

Recommended Posts

It seems that the scroll relates to an old shrine, though the scroll itself does not look so old to me.

The shrine might be this one.

Shiogama Jinja (鹽竈神社) in Miyagi-ken: http://www.genbu.net/data/mutu/siogama_title.htm

In the center, the names of three gods enshrined are described.

一宮鹽竈三坐 (Ichi no miya Shiogama sanza) – the first grade shrine Shiogama, three gods

左宮 武甕槌命 (sa-kyu; Takemikazuchi no mikoto) – in the left shrine: god of thunder

右宮 経津主命 (u-kyu; Futsunushi no mikoto) – in the right shrine: god of swords

別宮 塩土老翁神 (betsu-kyu; Shiotsuchioji no kami) –in the separate shrine: god of the sea (who introduced salt manufacturing)

On the right;

延喜式主税寮田祭塩竈神

延喜式 (Engi-shiki) – a historical law system of Heian period

主税寮 (Shuzei-ryo) – the tax bureau

田祭 (Ta-matsuri) - Feast

塩竈神 (Shiogama-shin) – god of Shiogama (shiogama = literally an oven to get salt)

On the left;

類聚國史舒明天皇奉敕 ? ? 錦錦布蠺繭

類聚國史 (Ruiju-kokushi) – a historical document written in 894

舒明天皇 (Jomei tenno) – the Emperor Jomei (reign: 629 - 641)

奉敕 (hochoku) – receiving the Emperor’s order

錦布 – brocade?

蠺繭 (kensan) – cocoons of silkworms
