Tsuba Help Please

Hello Everyone,

I am new at this but have inherited a katana from my father and would like some help placing a time period on the tsuba. I think it is signed Nobuie which I've read that there were many smiths who signed Nobuie. The tsuba is 4mm thick at center and 8mm at outer edge. The katana is unsigned as it has been shortened but I will add a photo.

Thank you,

Random

Your TSUBA does not show a typical NOBUIE design, as far as more famous or certified examples are concerned. I see a faint AMIDA YASURI on the plate plus birds and possibly a Chinese tray or table. The surface and patina make me believe a production no earlier than mid-EDO, but this is a personal impression based on photos. In any case, the age is not relevant when you look for quality (or value).

Radom,

As Jean said, I think this is a fairly generic tsuba. I don't think it was by one of the many Nobuiye that are famous, but the yasurime are a nice touch. It isn't a great tsuba, but not a terrible one either. Just a nice example of a real and old tsuba that is a nice example to keep on the sword.

It is thought that the 'real' Nobuiye craftsmen travelled around Japan and inspired off-shoot schools, e.g. Owari Nobuiye, Kaga Nobuiye, Akasaka Nobuiye. Your tsuba doesn't look that old, so perhaps it is a late Edo revival piece paying tribute to Nobuiye? I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will have more information for you.

Please see attached photo. This is 3 layer construction and is probably Owari Nobuiye. The notched corners and chidori birds are a kantei point for Owari Nobuiye.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one, unless your post is really relevant and adds to the topic..
