gang,

I am planning on writing an article on hawk paintings for the Jss/us.

The artist in question is Tamura Chokuo (circa early 17th cent ) of the Soga school.

There are not too many resources on this guy in English.........may be our fellow members in Japan can help me with any info gleamed from the Japanese text ?

Chokuo was known as a pupil of Soga Chokuan ( only 9 works by Chokuan are known ). The other well known Soga artist is Nichokuan.

For a sample of his signature and seal........... please klick the following link.

at middle of the web site ...........I get the following

17th Century

Painting

Folding Screens of Perched Hawks

Tsukuba University Library

by Tamura Chokuou

but the " clickable link " does not work !!

Nobody, think you can write to Tsukuba University Library and get some info on the screens ? This may just be the missing link I need for the article !!

Can you find the e-mail address of the library?

e-mail: voice@tulips.tsukuba.ac.jp

I think that if the missing link works, only the image of the painting will be shown.

I found one paper in Japanese. But please do not ask me to translate, as I do not have enough ability. :|

page 12........... mei compares very favorably !!

I have other scroll paintings and the mei/seals checked out well too.

Now all I have to do is to get someone to loosely translate the text.

again, thanks you, Nobody !!
