Marius
ko-Shoami Iron sukashi tsuba that Sasano would be proud of. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon. 62.5mm x 61.5mm x 4.7mm Momoyama period You don't see such tsuba very often. It came from Richard Turner's collection and below is Rich's description of it, which you can also find on his Kodogu No Sekai blog: http://kodogunosekai.com/2009/03/03/ko-shoami-古正阿弥-sukashi-tsuba/ Ko Shôami 古正阿弥 Ji sukashi tsuba that would date to the Momoyama period 桃山時代 finished in Yatsu Mokko gata 八木瓜形 (8 sided Mokko shape). This is an excellent old iron tsuba that displays much taste and character. The colour of the ji is jet black and glossy and has many of the characteristics of Owari ad Kanayama work. This tsuba is small, but the quality is outstanding. It features include ji sukashi (地透 open sukashi work), tetsu tsuchime ji (鉄槌目地 iron hammered surface), yatsu mokko gata (八木瓜形 8 sided Mokko shape), maru mimi (丸耳 a rounded rim), ko tekkotsu (鉄骨 small tekkotsu in the mimi), niku bori (肉彫 a curved carving) and ryohitsu shi (両櫃仕 2 hitsu ana). The large tagane in the nakago-ana is also reminiscent of earlier times. The dimensions are 62.5mm x 61.5mm x 4.7mm. The theme is Kagi ni chouji (Chou ko) sukashi no Zuruga 鍵に丁子透の図柄. The design is of the Keys and Cloves. There is a great balance between the organic design of the cloves, and the geometric key design. The angular design of the keys is done in the classic style of the Muromachi and Momoyama periods, by groups such as Owari and Kanayama. It is bold and shows much strength. It is nicely balanced with the softness of the cloves. This motif is practical in design and it projects an aesthetic of the Bushi life. The framework created by the keys suggests a nuance` of Genji-ko. We know from the chapters of the “Tale of Genji” the Genji crests or Genji-mon were created to use in the Kodo game “Kumiko” also called “Genji-ko”. The NBTHK attested to the quality of this tsuba by awarding it Tokubetsu Hozon. $1,350 incl. worldwide shipping, PayPal fee extra.
