Greeting NMB friends,

A sword dealer friend of mine from the Kansai area asked if I could generate interest in this sword which is currently on his Japanese website for yen 1,700,000.  I told him I would try the NMB as he knew I successfully sold a Kuniie not too long ago....so I'll try again with this one.  I also explained that a discount would be in good form so it is available for yen 1,600,000 to NMB members including shipping.

Yoshihara Shoji (Kuniie)

Don't miss this great opportunity to invest in the sword futures market should this important smith become Living National Treasure! Very robust katana of exceptional beauty by Yoshihara Shoji (Kuniie III).  This sword was made in 1992 when Shoji was 47 years old and a master of exceptional skill.

Shoji Yoshihara (Kuniie III) carries on the family tradition of forging swords in the Nihon So Tanto Jo at his residence in Nishi Mizoguchi. His well-known brother Yoshindo is a frequent visitor to sword shows in the U.S.  Shoji, as a young swordsmith, earned a long list of awards including:

-1966 youngest ever recipient of the Award for Effort

-1971 youngest ever recipient of the Mainichi Newspaper Award

-1982 awarded Mukansa at 37 years of age

 More recently

-2008 designated an Important Living Cultural Property of Tokyo

Shoji’s fame increased with a cameo appearance as a village sword smith in the entertaining but historically inaccurate movie “The Last Samurai” which starred Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise. A custom order sword by Kuniie costs approximately $25,000 at current exchange rates.

Whoever is the next owner, congrats in advance. I have seen an Ichimonji school katana with the same hamon at Sokendo and have a friend who has an Ishido katana with such Hamon. Always outstanding. It is surprising to see that it is far less expensive to get a famous mukansa second hand blade that an ordered new one. There is a similar sword by Ohno Yoshimitsu for sale at Tsuriginoya but not for the same price:
