Hi all,

I have three more tsuba for sale (check out the others here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20763). They are located in the UK and I am happy to ship worldwide. Payment by PayPal, I will cover the fees but the buyer pays the postage costs. Once sold, I will make a donation to the board. If you're interested in attributing these tsuba better than me, also check out my books for sale: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20741.

First tsuba: A Nobuiye style tsuba with gimei signature, mid/late-Edo

Made of iron, measurements are 6.6cm x 5.7cm, 5mm thick (at the rim, slightly thinner in the middle).

This is a nice tsuba made in the style of Nobuiye. I suspect it is a revival piece, made around the mid-late Edo period. It has a gimei signature of Nobuiye, I don’t think this was signed by the smith that made the tsuba as the guard itself is well made and the signature seems somewhat amateurish. The design on the tsuba is foliage in (I think) giri-bori engraving (you can still see the chisel marks where the metal was pushed out of the groove), typical of Nobuiye tsuba or later revival guards (for example those by Naokatsu, Naoaki etc). The patina is not shown well in the scans and looks much better in hand – it is a dark grey colour that seems to shimmer in sunlight, and almost looks 3D with a “depth” to it (quite hard to describe!). One of the hitsu ana is plugged with lead.

More hi res pics/scans on request, price £130 or $200

Second tsuba: A sukashi tsuba in the shape of two gourds, probably Higo and mid-Edo period.

Made of iron, measurements are 6.9cm x approx. 6.5cm, 5mm thick.

This design of tsuba is seen variously attributed to Higo artists – there is an example in the Oeder collection (number 411) attributed to Kamiyoshi, and an example in the September 2010 NCJSC newsletter (identical to this one) attributed to Yashiro Jingo. The two gourds theme is also seen in some Shoami work but this is usually accompanied with inlay, hence my Higo attribution. Some layering can be seen at the mimi.

Third tsuba: A simple lacquered Ko-Kinko tsuba, Muromachi period. HOLD

Made of copper/yamagane, measurements are 5.9cm x 5.4cm and 3.5mm thick.

A simple tsuba, likely from the late Muromachi period. Some damage (looks like water damage) and a previous owner has scratched a small cross on the seppa dai to confirm it is made of copper – this is all shown on the photos. Nice patina, nice old tsuba, priced to sell!

More hi res pics on request, price £50 or $80.
