You Tube Nihonto

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just a personal idea that I impulsively acted upon. There are lots of random pieces of video distribute on Youtube.com about swords or in connection with swords. So I came up with the idea of starting a group on youtube so as to collect various nihonto videos and collate them into a video library, this way you don't have to spend hours scouring through tons of rubbish. And if you do find something of note, you can submit it to the group for easy access at a later date.

I have selected that all videos are vetted before submition to keep out the Naruto crowd. If you find any nihonto related video on you tube, please save it to your favorites them submit it to the group. I have colllected some to start it off. Please peruse at your leisure.

Here's an entertaining series in 5 parts detailing the construction of a Nihonto. (Just check out the beautiful Tanaka Midori san firing arrows at her dad in part 5)

Hi Simon,

Tanaka Midori san is indeed a babe, if not Dai babe sama.

However, the reality of firing an arrow at a target of opportunity howsoever described would have been distinctly different.

Many Ryuha show defences against arrow flight, some practical, others others in the Fairy realm.

Let's please get real.

What I see is beautiful, however not real.

Mea maxima culpa.

Here is another one that you may like to try. The owner of this movie has three or four others including. Parts of the sword, cleaning and maintenance, Inspecting/appreciating, I forget the others but I found them very good only a pity they can't be downloaded as i would like to get the Pronunciation of the Japanese words correct.

Terrific idea! And what a great place for a video on tsuba making! Tsuba making! Has anyone ever seen such a thing? I've seen umpteen resources on the making of swords, but nada on the making of tsuba. This would be a great project for one of you wonderous expert metal worker/artists, yes? Make a cool video on tsuba, be the only one out there...please.

Thank you.

Hi Colin,

is your grandmother a gypsy?..or do have crystal balls? :D

Something rather unique in the works...of the highest quality too. Project starts on the 1st of June...with initial internet ready rough cuts ready early August. How much would you pay for 1 hour of what your heart desires?

I'll reveal more details this week ;)

regards,

Ford

Sorry about the delay in getting round to letting on to what my secretive project is all about.

You'll find all the details and some images on my blog, here.

It's very long entry because I wanted to record the whole story of how we got to this point so if you just want to get to the important stuff I mention that in the bottom half.

Thanks for your interest.

Good day all, came across this on another forum and was stunned by the amount of stresses that a blade is subjected to during yaki-ire (the quench). The initial nose dive and re-curve is dramatic as seen through this clear quench tank.

Swordsmith is Komiya Kuniharu.

If you're interested in a scientific explanation with pictures, you can download it here

Choose "Tatsuo Inoue Swordsmithing File".

"Control of inclusions in Japanese ancient iron and steel making" is another good reading.

G'day Yo'all,

I know this is a bit long in the tooth as Brian did give a link, but it is perhaps timely to say again that any Youtube video can be downloaded. Check this out:

http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/

I've been using for quite some time now. The video in question was 18.8 megabytes and took 6 minutes to download on my system.

Best regards,

Barry Thomas

Just adding Ford's video on Youtube to this sticky to keep it for the future:

Utsushi - the search for Katsuhira's tiger

You'll see the default quality setting on the play bar is usually 360p (on the right just below the screen). The film can be viewed in higher quality (up to 1080 High Definition ) by selecting a higher resolution setting. At the higher settings you can watch it in an expanded view to fill the screen.

Please feel free to download the files for your own use. You'll need to use RealPlayer software to do this. It's available for free here.

You'll find part one

.

and part 2

Please keep comments in their own thread (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9159) so as to keep this thread mainly for links.

Hi Paul

I had a chance to watch your video, it was very informative. I wish there were more to watch. One thing, when I clicked on the link you provided, YouTube stated it did not exist. I did a search by typing in in the search bar, "Nihonto" to find your video.

Cheers,

Steve

Greetings, fellow NMB members.

I have finally had some free time to convert some TV interviews with Mr. Jon Bowhay over to YouTube and have posted two of them. Please send me any feedback regarding the videos, which were converted from VHS, so there is some inherent flaws and damage due to the age of the tapes. I have at least two more videos to post, one of which is from another togishi, whose name slips my mind at this time. I will ask Mr. Bowhay to provide me with information on the video before I post it. Also, when I get the time, I will try to get subtitles added to the videos that are not in English. This effort will take some time to complete.

This video contains two interviews with renowned togishi, Mr. Jon Bowhay. The first interview is from CNN in English and the second interview is from a Japanese news broadcast (Teleport 6). The interviews show Mr. Bowhay polishing a sword and applying a hadori finish to the hamon.
