  1. I see two pegs in the picture. The 2nd peg is hard to see but it just to the right of the menuki in the first gap showing the same. Looks like the Kuchigane (correct term?) on the saya is broken off. It is the correct saya for the gunto, so I don't know why he think it been replaced. Your friend's gunto looks completely identical to my grandfather's type 3 gunto before I had it restored. Now it have brown wrapping with black same and the saya is painted green. There should be a signature on your friend's tang, it might look chippy though. Mine was signed as FUKUMOTO KANEMUNE and was made in January 1945. A very late war sword.
  2. Bruno, if you are interested in how much progress has been made in the quality of the swords then you should go to http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com for your research. The owner of that website reviews both european and Japanese sword. I personally like some of the european sword he reviews. He also pimp his own line of chinese-made Katanas that is produced with T-10 tool steel which is also differentially hardened. There is a video posted on his website in which he commits extreme sword abuse to prove how durable his blades is. Crazy guy, he is.
  3. Noted that there is no rust on the tang. I wouldn't buy any item from anyone trying to pass it off as the real deal.
  4. I see now, I was thinking of thejapanesesword.com. That would cause a bit of confusion.
  5. I sent Paul Martin a message on Facebook about the email situation. You can search him up there if you got a Facebook account. He is also a member of the Military Swords of Imperial Japan (Shin Gunto) group there.
  6. It supposed to be machine stamp, right? But it got Damascus pattern and very poor one at that. Yep it a fake. I think I saw a picture of this sword in the fake sword page of this website. Look at top of page for the link.
  7. They generally sell well on ebay, only those that place high starting bid requirement tend to have difficulty selling them. Gunto usually sell for 500 on up depending on condition and numbers of pictures posted.
  8. The picture of the tang is in this thread below; viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6543 The mei is Kanemune, Showa ni ju nen ichi gatsu. 1945 january. I'll look for your post in your profile about your Gunto.
  9. It is a sword that I received though inheritance from my Grandfather on Christmas last year. He passed away about two years ago and it took two years for me to get the Gunto. It was messy. I will be keeping it to pass on to my boy. Anyway, I mailed the sword and saya off to Fred yesterday for restoration work. The curvature is close enough. The liner needs to be replaced since the blade is getting polished.
  10. Can you go to the website of the chanel you were watching and see the schedule? Usually, the same program are shown a few times in a week.
  11. The saya that I won on auction from Ebay came in yesterday. It a bit rusty and will be restored and my gunto fits into the saya perfectly. The only concern that I have is the slight curvature difference in the blade and saya. If Fred Lohman is to have the new wood liner made for the saya, does the curve of the saya and blade have to be exact or just as long as the blade slides in the saya and lock in? The tip seems to point toward the back of the saya. Is that going to cause problem when making a new wood liner for the saya?
  12. Seems interesting if only to buy this lot and then flip it individually on ebay.
  13. loiner, Is it possible that Amahide made your blade but was signed by Fokomoto hince the fireball kao?
  14. Nice collection that you got there. It interesting to me that gunto swords comes in different color wraps and sayas. Any meanings to the colors of the swords?
